I've gotta be honest here. Marissa Mayer is completely out of touch with a very real, and very serious ailment. For such a bright woman (allegedly), it is disheartening and disturbing to think that simply because she has not personally experienced any of the symptoms of psychological burnout, that the phenomenon is a myth. Using her logic, because I enjoy eating a lot of food, I don't believe there is such thing as obesity. I mean afterall, obesity is about low self-esteem, right?

Unfortunately, because of her position of authority, Mayer can banter about her "legendary" work ethic and make sweeping accusations that are read by a large number of people. Unfortunately, she is dead wrong.

Burnout is about the mismatch between oneself and the working environment. There are several causes, and several symptoms. Let's not kid ourselves here... Burnout affects many professions, including healthcare, our military, and academia. Mayer does a disservice to people that are in the throes of burnout and their family by trivializing the phenomenon.

I work long hours that often mean a minimum of 14-16 hour days. I pack a lot in bucease I choose to do so. Having said that, my good health is a very serious commitment and so is my emotional & mental state. I have at least 1 day a week of complete selfishness. No matter what. Its not much, but it works for me. Hospitality and a speaking / writing career doesn't offer a lot of down time and I wouldn't have it any other way. And I refuse to apologise or make excuses for the way I live or work. I adore and enjoy it, 25 years into it.
